Review on Girl Talk's Album "All Day"

New Girl Talk Album a Sweet Surprise

On November 15th, the fans of the popular mash-up DJ Girl Talk were surprised to discover the release of his new album,” All Day”, an album not due to come out until later next year. The knowledge quickly spread as people began to share the link to the free download of the album on the Record Company’s website, www.illegal-art.net/allday. With so many people attempting to get the new album, the website crashed. Now along with the options to download the file as MP3(s) or a FLAC file, the website offers links to mirror sites in case the traffic continues to cause the server to go down.

Girl Talk gained popularity during his 2008 album, Feed the Animals, which he offered free online with an option to donate. In 2009 he started a huge dance party at UMass during the annual Spring Concert, where many say he outshined the concert’s headliner, Lupe Fiasco. Known for his energetic stage presence and his mash-up of popular songs, Girl Talk is hard not to like.

This new album opens with a mash-up of the Black Sabbath song “War Pigs”, mixed with the popular Ludacris song “Move Bitch.” Girl Talk is known for his ability to arrange a variety of different genres of popular music into one seamless track of upbeat tunes. This album includes a mash-up of relatively recent top 40 songs, such as “Whip My Hair” and “Teach Me How To Dougie”, mixed with a few old favorites such as songs by Radiohead and The Police. Tracks that one would never think would work together, (such as Arcade Fire and Lil Wayne) somehow jive so well that it sounds like they were made for each other. Many times the lyrics in the songs work together as well. Clearly there is a lot of thought and talent put into this album. One wonders how he was able to use such newly popular songs in his mashups. “All Day” ends with a bit of a takeaway message from one of the biggest bands in history.
